It’s the last week of November which means that it’s Joburg’s turn to bask in the horse racing limelight, with the running of the R2 million Sansui Summer Cup this Saturday at Turffontein. It seems to be 2013 Triple Crown winner Louis the King’s race for the taking but there are many others in the race who can spoil the party.
Trainers Geoff Woodruff and Alec Laird dominate the field with 4 runners each and are favoured to fill the top 4 positions. Woodruff, in addition to Louis the King has Kilua Castle, Lockheed Jetstar and the enigmatic Rake’s Chestnut who are all contenders on their day. Lockheed ran 4th in the Charity Mile and may be peaking at the right time. Rake’s Chestnut lost its jockey last time out and was unlucky, but cannot be overlooked especially with S’manga Khumalo on board.
Alec Laird saddles Charity Mile winner Bezanova who may find the extra 400m a touch too far. As You Like and Bouclette Top would have needed their last run and may be primed for this race while Earl of Derby ran a cracker of a race in the soft going to finish second to Judicial in the Victory Moon race over 1800m two weeks ago.
Judicial looks to make it 4 wins in a row over and is in with a shout should he overcome the draw of 14. Gavin van Zyl’s No Worries has been consistent of late but is 60kgs too much to carry in a class field? Joey Soma won this race 2 years ago with Wagner and will have Grade 1 winner Athina well prepped for this race. With Anthony Delpech aboard, she will be race handy.
It will be interesting to see how coastal raiders Disco Al and Bold Inspiration fare and could be the lurkers in the pack. Bold Inspiration has won 4 in a row in Durban, and has won before at Turffontein so expect Charles Laird to have him in good nick. Gold Cup winner Wavin’ Flag has not raced since July and may need the run.
I am expecting the class of Louis the King to prevail from Athina, Bold Inspiration and Wavin Flag in what is bound to be an exciting race!
