Kovsies, Pukke, Maties and Tuks remain the strongest teams of this year’s Varsity Netball tournament, with the possibility of UJ moving up the log in weeks to come. This means that there is a chance of a 2013 repeat with Kovsies and Pukke in the final. However, Tuks has been holding the top position for a few weeks and they have shown no sign of backing down.

Defending champions UFS-Kovsies were made to grind out a hard fought 53-38 bonus point win over NMMU-Madibaz as they look to retain their title. The first quarter started at a furious pace with both sides exchanging goals as both sets of forwards found the bottom if the net at will. The Madibaz managed to head into the first break holding a slender 14-12 lead. There was no let-up at the start of the second quarter as Kovsies managed to first draw level before taking the lead thanks to a dominant performance during the powerplay. Both sides kept the scoreboard ticking as the home side went into the halftime interval with a 28-22 lead. The Madibaz came out full of energy at the start of the third quarter as they tried to reduce the home side’s lead but Kovsies showed their temperament as they extended their lead to 40-31 as the final quarter approached. Kovsies managed to maintain their lead and did enough to secure a bonus point in the closing stages of the match to walk away 53-38 victors.

NWU-Pukke cruised to a convincing 76-26 victory over winless VUT in their Varsity Netball clash in Potchefstroom. The home side got on top early on and took the game to VUT who were staring down a 27-8 deficit at the end of the first quarter. NWU-Pukke took their powerplay at the start of the second period and made the most of it to pile the pressure on the visitors. VUT were giving it everything they had, but they could not hold back the NWU-Pukke wave and went into half-time trailing 43-13.The visitors had to chase the game, and ran hard in an attempt to shut NWU-Pukke down, but they could not stop the rampant home side. NWU-Pukke claimed the bonus point in the third quarter and continued their dominance until the end as VUT wilted under the relentless pressure.

Maties put in a dominant performance and ran out convincing 71-13 winners in front of their home fans to claim the Cape bragging rights in this year’s Varsity Netball competition. The home side showed their dominance early in the match and took full control over UCT which saw them take a 15-2 lead at the end of the first quarter. There was no stopping Maties in the second quarter as they once again dominated their opponents. The home side increased their lead to take a massive 36-6 lead going into the halftime break. Maties kept their foot firmly on the gas in the third quarter and went into the final quarter with a healthy and unassailable lead. It was all too easy for the home side as they cantered to a convincing 71-13 bonus point victory to claim the Cape derby bragging rights.

UP-Tuks continued their unbeaten Varsity Netball run with a dominant 97-27 victory over UJ in Pretoria. It was their fifth consecutive win of the season to maintain their spot at the top of the standings, whilst it was a third defeat for UJ who find themselves down in fifth place. The home side bolted out of the blocks as they took the game to UJ, and the visitors found themselves chasing the game from the outset. UP-Tuks’ dominance saw them take a commanding lead into the first break after an opening quarter which saw little go UJ’s way. The home side were clinical in their execution, with captain Melissa Myburgh prolific in front of goal as they piled the pressure on the visitors. UP-Tuks took the powerplay five minutes before half-time and made good use of it as they built up a 49-16 lead by the break. They claimed the bonus point early in the second half, and although UJ fought hard there really was no way back into the game for them. At the final break UP-Tuks had established a massive 74-22 advantage and it was more of the same in the final quarter as they cruised to a convincing victory.
