Varsity Netball 2014

The second round of Varsity Netball took place in Port Elizabeth and Potchefstroom. Teams are starting to prove their mettle with TUKS topping the log after two consecutive victories. Close behind are NMMU and NWU who will battle it out on the 06th October. The bumper weekend will continue on Sunday and Monday leaving just 4 weeks behind for the teams to fight for the winning title.

Defending Varsity Netball champions Kovsies notched their first victory of 2014 with a 71-17 demolition of UCT in Potchefstroom today. Having gone down to UP-Tuks on home soil in Round One, Kovsies bounced back in fine style whilst for UCT it was a second defeat on the trot. Both teams were making basic errors in the first quarter, but things were looking tough for UCT who trailed 15-8 at the first break. By half-time Kovsies had built up a commanding 42-10 lead, leaving UCT with it all to do in the second half. By the final break Kovsies were ahead 59-14, and although the final quarter lacked the intensity of the first three, there was no denying Kovsies their first win of the competition.

UP-Tuks made it two consecutive Varsity Netball victories with a 62-34 win against Maties in Port Elizabeth today. Having beaten defending champions Kovsies in Bloemfontein last week, UP-Tuks continued their momentum whilst for Maties it was a second straight defeat. The Pretoria side dominated the early exchanges to build up a 5-1 advantage and by the first break they were already 15-4 up. They maintained that dominance in the second period and managed to prevent Maties from scoring in the powerplay to establish a comfortable 35-15 half-time lead. It was more of the same in the third quarter as Maties battled to stay in touch, and UP-Tuks went into the final break on the brink of a bonus point at 47-27.Maties took the powerplay at the start of the final quarter as they looked to fight their way back, but UP-Tuks cruised to a resounding victory in the end.

NMMU notched their second straight Varsity Netball victory by beating VUT 57-28 in Port Elizabeth today. Following their away win against UCT, the Madibaz impressed their home crowd as VUT slumped to their second defeat in as many games.

The home side made an assured start to the game, and by the first break they had already established a solid 15-6 lead. The visitors were fighting hard, but battled to build any real momentum and trailed 28-13 at the half-time break. That left VUT with it all to do in the second half, and they threw absolutely everything at the Madibaz in an attempt to fight their way back into the contest. However, they could not turn things around and NMMU took a comfortable 41-22 lead into the final quarter. The biggest question was whether the home side would go on to claim a bonus point, and they managed without much of a problem to notch their second win of the season.                                                                                                                                   FNB Player of the match: Zanele Vimbela

NWU-Pukke were impressive in their 65-49 Varsity Netball victory against UJ in Potchefstroom today .Last year’s beaten finalists made it two wins from their first two games, whilst it was a first defeat for UJ. The hosts made a fast start and scored five unanswered goals from the word go. The game was being played at an incredible pace, but Pukke made the most of their opportunities and led 20-9 at the first break. UJ regrouped and managed to put some pressure on Pukke in the second quarter as they started to fight their way back into the contest. However, Pukke were having none of that and a dominant burst just before the break saw them take a healthy 33-21 lead into half-time. By the final break Pukke were 47-33 up, and the only thing left for them was to claim the bonus point. They did so without fuss and closed out what was a convincing win in the end to maintain their unbeaten start to the competition.
