Varsity Netball 2014


Varsity Netball got off to an explosive start in Round One, with some outstanding individual performances on the opening day. There was an upset as defending champions Kovsies lost their opening game at home to UP-Tuks, whilst in Potchefstroom Pukke were made to work hard for their win by a determined Maties. The NMMU Madibaz sounded a warning with a comfortable victory over UCT in Cape Town, and in Johannesburg UJ sealed top spot on the standings with a big win against newcomers VUT.

Looking to the weekend ahead, NMMU Madibaz have maximised their firepower for three pivotal Varsity Netball home games that start in Port Elizabeth on Saturday. Madibaz coach Dumisani Chauke has called up wing defender Sinongiwe Madangatye and Luzanne Visagie on wing attack to add experience and balance to the youthful side, which also features Proteas goalkeeper Zanele Vimbela. UP-TUKS won their opening match beating the defending champions, Kovsies 54-48 on Sunday. Kgoputso said it was a tough and vigorous match but she is pleased they walked away with a win. Looking ahead to their next match against new kids on the block, VUT, she said they will work on keeping the on their targeted number of goals per match.

The University of Johannesburg’s netball team will make their way to Potchefstroom this weekend where they will face Pukke and Kovsies during the first bumper weekend of the Varsity Netball tournament. There is great energy amongst the UJ team and they are looking to maintain their current number one position on the log.
