Most international elite marathon runners ever to take part in South African marathon event begin arriving in Mother City.
Cape Town, 18 September – South Africa’s highest prize-pursed event for a standard marathon has begun welcoming an enviable lineup of participants, including the most IAAF-classified Gold Label-status elite marathon runners ever to take part in a South African sports event.
Over 12 500 entrants have registered for the festival of running taking place this weekend in Cape Town, with 4 500 participating in the classic Olympic 42,2km marathon on Sunday. The international participants represent 45 countries including the US, UK, France, Uganda, Japan, Australia, Germany, Ireland, Netherlands and Kenya. Among the first to arrive was Olympic silver medalist and three-times world 800 m champion Wilson Kipketer, who as a representative of the Marathon’s lead beneficiary, Peace and Sport, L’Organisation pour la Paix par le Sport, will be taking part in the 10km Peace Run.

Sunday’s marathon event will be televised live on SABC 2 from 6:30am to 11:00am, while 17 SABC radio stations will also provide live coverage.
