KwaZulu-Natal’s famous Karkloof Country Club was named as South Africa’s top mountain bike trail in Bicycling magazine’s Top 100 MTB Trails In SA, announced in their July/August edition.
Together with a panel of well-travelled experts, Bicycling took on an extensive search to find, and give readers, a tried-and-tested list of the top century of SA trails, ranked by ride-ability, location, trail conditions and accessibility.
“Karkloof has lots of technical single track with rocks, berms and rollers, and nice, beginner-friendly jumps, but still plenty of kays of trails to keep a novice busy for weeks,” agreed three KwaZulu-Natal trail experts, Dave Drummond, Nigel Hicks and Devlin Fogg.
Western Cape’s Jonkershoek and Paul Cluver trails made the top five cut, while Gauteng’s Mankele Trails came a close second to Karkloof. Braamfontein Spruit – known as ‘The Spruit’ – was also included, after the panel decided that the trail scored high for its accessibility.
“South Africa is packed with amazing cycling trails, but we felt it was important to recognise the trails that really do a great job for the average rider,” said Bicycling Deputy Editor Bryony McCormick. “We will announce our Top 100 Trails on an annual basis, and are already expanding our network of trail judges to ensure we get as much input as possible from regular riders.”
