VARSITY HOCKEY KICKS OFF WITH A BANG

A day of upsets, surprises and stellar performances

On the back of a highly successful Varsity Athletics programme, Varsity Hockey got off to a phenomenal and thrilling start.  This year’s electrifying Varsity Hockey men’s season, which kicked off its opening leg today at the University of the Witwatersrand, saw eight competing teams from universities around the country take each other on in what at times was a gruelling, but rousing and gripping few hours.

The opening match saw UFS-Kovsies secure a 2-1 victory over NMMU’s Madibaz, with Alfred Hensburg scoring the decisive goal right at the end. Whilst a bitter pill for Kovsies, their performance showed that they are still a definite contender for the rest of this weekend’s line-up. With the second match of the day going into half-time deadlocked at 0-0, it was ultimately UP-Tuks who emerged victorious over UCT.  A fabulous second half saw Matthew Guise-Brown and Andrew Buckley both score to secure a 2-0 victory, with Guise-Brown receiving the Samsung Super Striker award for his opening goal.  The second half of the day proved as exciting and nail-biting with UJ dominating Rhodes to finish with a 7-1 win.  UJ’s Clinton Panther, who has represented SA’s national team no fewer than 69 times, scored a stunning goal in the second half to further cement UJ’s win. But it proved a disappointing end to the day for the home team, unable to secure a victory on home ground. Despite a strong start from Wits, together with some brilliant goalkeeping, it was Maties who emerged clear winners with a 5-1 win against Wits.

FNB’s Man of the Match awards went to Jason Maclachlan, UFS-Kovsies; Richard Pautz, UP-Tuks; Gareth Heyns, UJ and Jordan Turnbul, Maties.

With two more days of non-stop and explosive hockey action to look forward to, get yourself down to Wits’ hockey fields to witness this Sunday and Monday’s excitement first hand. Matches commence at 11h00 on Sunday, 4 May and 13h30 on Monday, 5 May.
