Do Bafana really have it in them to win AFCON 2013?

katlego-mphela-hand-over-headWith SAFA’s appointment of Gordon Igesund as the new coach of Bafana Bafana, spirits were high amongst SA fans, and many thought he was the right man to guide us to another win in the African Cup of Nations with SA being the hosts in 2013.

Yet while the tournament crept closer and closer, Bafana’s results didnt change, losses sprinkled with a few draws was what Bafana had been managing, yet no-one really worried, and no-one wondered whether Igesund was in fact┬áthe right man for the job.

The reason for this? Gordon is brilliant at post match interviews and he assured us that this was okay and it was in preparation for AFCON 2013, and everyone sort of just accepted this.

Then when the day finally arrived, SA vs Cape Verde in the opener, what happened? 0-0 a scoreline that SA fans have become way to accustomed with in recent times, and it begs the question, did Igesund really have things under control or was he using the whole ‘preparing for AFCON thing’ as a way to take heat off him with SA’s results, and he just hoped it would come right before AFCON? I personally am starting to think it was the latter.

So do I think Bafana have a decent chance at winnings AFCON 2013? I want to say yes, I really do, but goals win matches, and with Bafana Bafana’s evident lack of scoring ability, I just can’t see them getting over the line this tournament.
