Match 55 of the IPL sees Rising Pune Supergiant host Kings XI Punjab in the first of Sunday’s fixtures and at least one of these sides will be appearing in the play offs.
Rising Pune lost by 7 runs to the Daredevils in Delhi on Friday, a game RPS needed to win to seal a play off place. All is not lost for Rising Pune because if Sunrisers Hyderabad lose to Gujarat Lions on Saturday, Pune will be assured of a play off spot but if this Sunrisers win, this game against KXP will be a “virtual eliminator”. The defeat in Delhi ended a sequence of 4 straight wins for RPS who come into the game with 8 wins and 5 defeats against their name.
When the teams met back in Match 4 Kings XI won by 6 wickets. Ben Stokes top scored with 50 for RPS in a bat first total of 163/6 but Kings XI were more than equal to the task and skipper Glenn Maxwell (44 not out) took them home with an over to spare.
Regardless of what happens in other games the equation for Kings XI is simple, win and advance to the play offs, lose and the tournament is over. KXP have also won 4 of their last 5 and the last 2 came against play off contenders KKR and Mumbai Indians. As a record of 7 wins and 6 defeats suggests you never quite know what you are going to get from KXP but they are hanging in gamely and if they go down, expect it to be guns blazing.
