Kolkata Knight Riders host Mumbai Indians in the second of Saturday’s IPL matches, the final game of the regular season for both these teams and the result will have a huge bearing on the composition of next week’s play offs.
At the time of writing the Knight Riders play off place was not confirmed and we might need to wait until the outcome of Friday’s game and the earlier match on Saturday for the picture to become clearer. There is also the race for a top two finish which offers a potentially more direct to the final to consider and that means this game will be fiercely contested regardless of results elsewhere. The Knight Riders came unstuck against Kings XI in Mohali last time out and have now lost 3 of their last 4. The late stumble comes towards the end of in what had been a consistent campaign for KKR and their record now comprises of 8 wins and 5 defeats.
When the teams met back in Match 7 Mumbai won by 4 wickets. Manish Pandey top scored for KKR with an unbeaten 81 but Mumbai chased it down with a ball to spare with Nitish Rana top scoring with 50 and Hardik Pandya smashed 29 off 11 balls at the death.
Mumbai are two points better off the Knight Riders and at the time of writing their play off place was assured but a top two finish was not. Defeat here could see them finish below KKR depending on net run rate and they have also gone off the boil of late, losing their last two matches. Mumbai were beaten by the Sunrisers in their penultimate outing and then they also fell victim to Kings XI, a fourth defeat of the campaign alongside 9 wins.
