The Highlanders host the Rebels in Dunedin in Friday’s only Super Rugby match and we take a look at the game from a betting perspective.

This will be the Highlanders 3rd home match having lost their first 2 to the Chiefs and Crusaders. They have had 2 narrow victories on the road though beating the Brumbies and the Blues in low scoring affairs. This will be the Highlanders first home match against non-New Zealand opposition and their first 2 games have averaged 48 points each.
The Rebels are still without a victory in 2017 but at half time last week they must have thought that a win over the Waratahs was on the cards. They led by 16 points and increased this to 19 points after the break but the visitors came storming back to win 32-25. The Rebels have only played 1 away match this season and it did not go well and they went down by 65 points to the Hurricanes in Wellington. The Rebels have conceded 26 tries in 4 games and at least 4 tries in each game this season.
The Highlanders have hosted the Rebels twice winning by 3 points in 2014 and by 21 back in 2012.
Highlanders -23.5 at 9/10
Rebels +23.5 at 9/10
Suggested bet: Alternative winning margin, Highlanders by 21 to 30 points inclusive at 3/1.
There has been money for the Highlanders on the handicap this week and it has shifted out a couple of points since the betting opened. I can’t see the Rebels troubling the Highlanders but with a number of players injured the Highlanders haven’t looked as convincing as they have in past seasons and I am reluctant to back them on the handicap. For this reason I am going with the more speculative play that the final winning margin will be from 21 to 30 points.
