VARSITY FOOTBALL IS SET TO WOW THE CROWDS

Monday sees the start of this year’s season of Varsity Football. Now in its second year, eight universities will tightly contest the winner’s title over the next seven weeks. The universities include NMMU (Port Elizabeth); NWU (Potchefstroom); UP-Tuks (Pretoria); Kovsies (Bloemfontein); UWC (Cape Town); UJ (Soweto); UCT (Cape Town) and Limpopo (Polokwane). Matches will be broadcast live on SuperSport , bringing the excitement of a Varsity Football event into the homes of the viewers. Games with a 16:45 starting time will be aired on both channels 210 and 204.

NMMU are first up, and will have a tough job on their hands as they welcome NWU to Port Elizabeth for the opening game of the season. The Madibaz surprised many football fans in the inaugural tournament last year by making it through to the final unbeaten. Their captain, Kurt Duff, knows that this time around, they may not have it that easy. NWU made a strong start to the tournament last year and were the favourites of many tournament supporters to take the title. However, they stumbled in their home semi-final against eventual champions, UP-Tuks.

Limpopo will make their Varsity Football debut on the Green Mile in Cape Town as they take on a revived UCT side. The Ikeys struggled in the inaugural tournament last year, but under a new coach and with some new faces in the squad, the team believes they can raise the bar this year, and are hoping for victory in their game against Limpopo.

UWC will be out to show new boys UJ just what Varsity Football is all about when the two sides meet in their opening fixture in Bellville on Monday. UJ, under the guidance of former Bafana Bafana star Bradley Carnell, will want to announce their arrival in style. However, they are up against a UWC side that will be keen to impress in front of their home crowd, and captain Cleo Pokpas says his team is out to win, and will not take a step backwards for any team.

Defending Varsity Football champions UP-Tuks will kick their season off at home when they take on a determined Kovsies side in Pretoria on Monday. Although they had a convincing victory against Kovsies away from home last year, Schwartz insists his team will not be taking anything for granted against the Bloemfontein outfit on Monday.

CEO for Varisty Sports, Duitser Bosman says, “The excitement and quality of Varsity Football is what draws the crowds to these events. These high-energy events are well organised and offer huge spectator entertainment.”

Marketing Executive for Varsity Sports, Guy Loxton adds, “Varsity Sports is seeing many promising sportsmen and women successfully compete at its events and gain the attention they deserve.”

Bringing much of the excitement often seen at American baseball games, Varsity Sports events are renowned as much for their athletic mettle as they are for their showmanship, with flashy cheerleaders, pyrotechnics, thumping music and blaring fans. The concept is that of a playground, where the best footballers can test themselves against their peers. Market-leading brands sponsor the platform, with Samsung, Debonairs Pizza, FNB, Cell C and Jet Mart as the lead football sponsors.

The first round of Varsity Football will roll out from 21st July, 2014 in Port Elizabeth, Pretoria, Bellville and Cape Town. The programme follows.
