Super Rugby Round 5 Preview

Just the 3 out of 6 last week which makes our season record 15-7. Hoping to bounce back strongly this weekend, so let’s get to the picks.

Chiefs vs Stormers

Chiefs have had a bye so I can definitely see quite a lot of the early season rustiness still affecting their game, while Stormers on the other hand seemed to be coming right in their match against the Saders. It is also Jean de Villiers’ 100th game and so I am backing the boys from Cape Town to upset the defending champs.

Prediction: Stormers by 6

Rebels vs Crusaders

Rebels were humiliated in their game against the Force, but I don’t think too much can be taken from the loss, simply ‘one of those games’ where everything goes wrong. Expecting them to bounce back strongly in front of their home crowd against a Saders outfit that really doesn’t impress me this season.

Prediction: Rebels by 6

Hurricanes vs Cheetahs

Every year their is a team that everyone thinks has to win one eventually, but ends up losing about 7 or 8 in a row. Canes are the only team that hasn’t won yet, so I’m making this pick purely on history repeating itself this season.

Prediction: Cheetahs by 6

Highlanders vs Western Force

Big win for the Force last week, but I suspect it was quite simply a fluke victory, and I think normality will resume here against the Landers.

Prediction: Highlanders by 15

Brumbies vs Waratahs

Could make a solid argument for both teams in this one, but even with Brumbies playing at home, I can’t look past the start Waratahs have had. They have looked the most impressive team of the whole competition in the bit we have seen of them so far.

Prediction: Waratahs by 7

Lions vs Blues

What a tough weekend this is. Another 50/50 call here, Lions have exceeded expectations game after game. I just feel the wheels have to come off sometime though, so I’m picking the team that on paper definitely should win this encounter.

Prediction: Blues by 9

Sharks vs Reds

Sharks might be winning, but they aren’t putting up the performances I was expecting pre season, in saying that though, while it might not be pretty, they are a team that knows how to win, and with it also being Reds first game on tour I am going with the home team here.

Prediction: Sharks by 8

Bulls get a well deserved rest this weekend, they have the bye.
